Steps to Getting Quality Bespoke Clothing

When ordering clothing direct from a manufacturer, it can sometimes be difficult to trust you’ll receive a service and end product you’re completely happy with. Having a lack of control over the manufacturing process can lead to subpar results and you feeling out of pocket for a 2nd class service.

At Orotoro, they work through their vertically integrated factories to produce bespoke clothing for their customers. With over 15 years experience and client’s that include world leading high street brands, they understand the top quality service that is required and never fall short of providing you with the best. This is mainly achieved through the total control they have over their manufacturing process which creates clothes out of quality fabrics with short lead times.

Their product range includes plain, printed and embroided tees, hoodies, polos, vests, leggings and track pants.

Their 8 week bespoke manufacture path goes through the following stages:

• Week 1
Preparing the production fabric
• Week 2 -3
Dyeing the Fabric & Approvals
• Week 4
Preparing print & embroidery
• Week 5
Preparing pre-production samples
• Week 6-7
Proceed to production
• Week 8
Finishing, quality check & packing

Each stage of this in-house, 2 month process is checked and approved. Ensuring it’s of the highest standard before it proceeds to the next step and eventually your door.

For their specially tailored bespoke clothing, Orotoro focus on 6 key service points:

• Total control over all aspects of the business
• Consistency of fabric
• Vertical factories for total control
• 20 years of print and application expertise
• Fast turnaround and low minimums
• Fulfilment allowing multiple deliveries in the UK and Europe

The Fairwear Foundation (Part 2)

Companies that produce and distribute bespoke clothing products of which the main manufacturing process is sewing can join FWF and, depending on the direct influence they have with garment factories, become an FWF affiliate or FWF ambassador. Both affiliates and ambassadors of FWF work towards improving the labour conditions in factories andblank apparel workshops where the ‘cut-make-trim’ stage takes place, all over the world. The basis of the collaboration between FWF and a member is the Code of Labour Practices. Eight labour standards form the core of the Code of Labour Practices. Members of FWF must comply with this Code of Labour Practices.

Fair Wear Foundation’s Guiding Principles

  • Supply chain responsibility:Realising that the Code can only be fulfilled when sourcing companies, as well as factory management, actively pursue practices that support good working conditions.
  • Labour standards derived from ILO Conventions and the UN’s Declaration on Human Rights: basing FWF’s Code on internationally-recognised standards which have been set through tri-partite negotiation.
  • Multi-stakeholder verification:Verification processes developed through multi-stakeholder negotiation, and involving experts from diverse disciplines and perspectives in Fair Wear Foundation verification teams.
  • A process-approach to implementation:Paying special attention to the means (i.e. building functioning industrial relations systems over time) in order to achieve the end (i.e. sustainable workplace improvements).
  • Involvement of stakeholders in production countries: Engaging local partners in shaping FWF’s approach in a given region or country.
  • Transparency: Keeping relevant stakeholders informed of FWF policies, activities, and results; publicly reporting on member company efforts to fulfil FWF requirements.
  • FWF is governed by the following organisations:Modint (business association for manufacturers and distributors of fashion, interior design, carpets and textiles)
  • CBW-MITEX (business association for retailers of interior design, fashion, shoes and sportswear
  • FGHS (business association for sporting goods suppliers)
  • FNV Bondgenoten (federation of trade unions – service industry)
  • CNV dienstenbond (Christian trade union – service industry)
  • Clean Clothes Campaign (The Netherlands)

Supporting Fairwear Foundation

We at Orotoro have been supporters of the Fairwear Foundation for a number of years, and are enthusiastic about evangelising the work that they do. Our essentials blank apparel range has always carried the FWF logo in our garments and all of our bespoke clothing are manufactured under FWF’s guiding principles. So if you would like to know more, please visit fairwear.org or you can contact the FWF by email at info@fairwear.org.

The Fairwear Foundation

January 9th, 2012 by

The mission of the Fair Wear Foundation is to improve labour conditions in the bespoke clothing and garment industry.

Fair Wear Foundation (FWF) is an international verification initiative dedicated to enhancing workers’ lives all over the world. We work closely with a growing number of companies that produce bespoke clothing and other sewn products and that take responsibility for their supply chain.

FWF keeps track of the improvements made by the blank apparel companies it works with. And through sharing expertise, social dialogue and strengthening industrial relations, FWF increases the effectiveness of the efforts made by companies.

Change requires a major joint effort. They therefore invite blank apparel and clothing companies to join FWF and make a difference. If you’re interested in how they can help you, send them an e-mail at info@fairwear.org

Good labour conditions are FWF’s mission: make them part of yours!

The Unified Colours of Orotoro

December 8th, 2011 by

When you are looking for a number of colours to create a range of blank apparel, picking really nice individual colours that suit a particular design can be problematic. When looking for colours many things should be taken into consideration…

The number one consideration for any company should be to get more for your money, which will help towards the bottom line. However, this need not be a compromise.

If you narrow your blank apparel colours to a range of colours that complement each other, then you can save by buying larger quantities of fabric, dyed a specific colour, and re-using that fabric across a number of designs. This has the added effect of unifying the bespoke clothing in the range.

When you are choosing which colours to make up your bespoke clothing range, choosing the brightest red, coolest blue and the most vibrant green, is not a good way to achieve a harmonious range of colours that will complement each other on the rail. The look of an object will always be improved if you can improve that objects surroundings. So bringing all of the colours into harmony with each other can greatly enhance the range as a whole. This can be seen to good effect in the range of colours used in the Orotoro Essentials range of blank apparel. The Essentials range has a wide colour gamut, Black, White, Red, Green, Blue, Violet, etc., which would typically create a cacophony of clashing colours. However, what is clever about this range of colours is that each piece of bespoke clothing has been tweaked to bring it in harmony with the rest of the range.

An example to explain this would be Patrol Red. A typical T-shirt red is as bright as you like and a great colour in isolation. But if you put this shirt among our other plain t-shirts in other colours it seems garish and shouty, and can be off-putting when on a rail. To resolve this conflict of colour, Patrol Red in the Essentials blank apparel range is a shade or two darker, while retaining a bright saturated red colour. It does not clash with other colours in the range like Super Blue or Kelly Green, and Patrol Red also harmonises nicely with Ultraviolet, Dewberry and Fuchsia. In fact all of the colours used in the plain t-shirts in our Essentials range look great when placed next to Patrol Red. And that is the goal, and should be a primary consideration when choosing your colours for your ranges in the future.

Garment decoration should also be brought into the mix when creating a harmonious range. Utilising the cross compatibility of colour we can print one garment colour onto another, or alternatively print a single ink colour across a number of garment colours. This ethos can extend across genders as well. Using the Essentials colours as an example, the men’s range of colours have a corresponding colour in the women’s so printing men’s Super Blue onto a women’s Bluebird garment give a nice tonal print, which also works well the other way Bluebird/Super Blue. There are many combinations throughout the Essentials range, Patrol Red/Fuchsia, Ultraviolet/Dewberry, Kelly Green/Green Glow, etc.

So when you are picking colours for a new bespoke clothing range, remember to harmonise the brightness and saturation of any particular colour so that it fits well among the rest. Also consider using the colours you have chosen when colouring the decoration of a plain t-shirt to unify the range as a whole.
